Balcony garden tips

A balcony garden adds beauty to views, reduces pollution, improves air quality and gives fresh herbs/ veggies for cooking. Also a balcony garden gives you a beautiful and relaxing space for you. Here are few basic tips for a balcony garden

Make sure the sunlight is just enough for the plants. Extensive sunlight causes damage to some delicate plants. Make use of shade nets to cover the plants from excessive heat and protect them. It is advisable to use clay pots since they have a natural property of keeping the plants cool. Colour the clay pots to give your personal touch.

Arrange the plants size wise to give a neat look.

Trim the edges of the plants at regular intervals.

In small balconies keep plante which occupy more vertical space rather than bushy broader ones.Show your aesthetic sense by decorating with beautiful pebbles.

CHOOSING THE SOIL: Top soil/gardening soil is an important ingredient in raising healthy plants. Ensure you go with right type of soil for each of the plants.

POTS: Size depends on the type of plant and particularly the size of the roots. Type of the pots depends on the space you are going to utilize. Example: wide Decorative pots for outdoors and big Balconies. Railing planters, vertical planters for smaller ones. There are wide variety of indoor planters. Table top Planters are the widely used ones for style.

WATERING: Watering the plant is an important point to be taken care of. Water level depends on whether the plant is in ground or in container. Plants that grow on ground should be watered till the soil is completely wet. While you water the plants in containers, keep in mind that you water the plants till some water starts draining from the drainage holes in the container. 

 NUTRIENT ELEMENTS: Fertilizers are essential to boost plant growth. Try to go for organic and eco-friendly fertilizers like compost. Be cautious when feeding your plants with artificial fertilizers which used in excess quantity would affect the plants health.

 SPACING BETWEEN PLANTS: Donot crowd the seeds in single pot which could result in deficiency of water, light and nutrient supply to plants. 

DEPTH OF SEEDS: Planting seeds at the right depth improves their chances of developing into sturdy plants and  increases their germination rate. In general, the seeds should be planted at the depth of two or three times the width of the seed. Sowing depth has a key role in germination. If the seeds are planted too deep, they may fail to germinate. 

 PEST CONTROL: Pest control is an essential part of raising healthy plants. Pests get transferred to other nearby plants very easily. So make sure to separate the pest affected plants from the healthier ones. Use organic pesticides in right amount. 

 WEEDING: Always make sure you do a regular maintenance by removing dead leaves and weeds which left unnoticed will harm your healthy plants. Make sure the weeds are completely removed with their roots.
